Reuters announced Christian Democrat Van Rompuy is the First President of Europe.

he ‘Haiku man’ and Prime Minister of Belgium crowns his career with this key European position. He is blessed with the gift of diagnosis, synthesis and a philosophical humor, as Belgian paper ‘De Standaard’ states. The British papers were less enthusiastic and already nicknamed the politician as ‘Rompy’.
Together with Dehaene, he became the most important architect of the crisis policy that steered Belgium into sound budgetary waters, enabling it to join the euro zone in 1998.
